I am a senior citizen retired after working for 50 years in various professions. I find social media intriguing, blogging uplifting, and technology in general a welcomed challenge. My newest interests are Aromatherapy and Essential Oils. I have recently acquired an Aromatherapist Certification from the New York Institute of Aromatics. I write about all of these interests as topics on my various blogs. I am hopeful that the posts I create bring information that is useful and moves my readers to explore more.

Back to school – are you ready?

As parents we want to help our children get off to the best start when attending school for the first time, or returning to school after a nice long summer.  But what are the things we should focus on to aid us in providing the care they need?  I searched around the www to find some guidelines for you.  As always click the link to read the details.

  • The following health and safety tips are from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Feel free to excerpt these tips or use them in their entirety in any print or broadcast story, with acknowledgment of source.

MAKING THE FIRST DAY EASIER -Remind your child that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. This may be at any age. Teachers know that students are nervous and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.via Back to School Tips.

– BACKPACK SAFETY – Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Pack light. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of your child’s body weight.

* BULLYING – Bullying or cyberbullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly. Bullying can be physical, verbal, or social. It can happen at school, on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, over the Internet, or through mobile devices like cell phones.

Help your child learn how to respond by teaching your child how to:
1. Look the bully in the eye.
2. Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation.
3. Walk away.

– DEVELOPING GOOD HOMEWORK AND STUDY HABITS –Create an environment that is conducive to doing homework. Children need a consistent work space in their bedroom or another part of the home that is quiet, without distractions, and promotes study.

  • Establish a good sleep routine. Insufficient sleep is associated with lower academic achievement in middle school, high school and college, as well as higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness. The optimal amount of sleep for most adolescents is in the range of 8.5 to 9.5 hours per night.

Summer Hair Tips!

sun damage pic for post I love the summer, beautiful beach water, fire flies, surfing!
However, what summer can do to your hair is cause for concern.  I searched around for some tips on what you can do to prevent damage.

Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair, too. Saltwater and chlorine also take a toll on our tresses. The not-so-pretty outcome: A few weeks into summer, hair that was shiny and easily managed looks and feels fried.

Fried hair isn’t just a figure of speech. Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, a New York dermatologist, says the ultraviolet rays of the sun actually “cook the hair shaft.” The damage is most obvious when we see color-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy. Even hair that isn’t colored will suffer from sun-induced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair shaft. via Summer Hair Care – Keep Your Locks Looking Great.summer hair

  • Once you’ve found the right cut for your texture,  a few of the right products—applied at the right time—is all it takes to create a terrific style. via The Best Summer Hair Products.

Diet & Beauty… Are These Two Related? Does It Matter?

vegetablesHow many of you believe that what we consume, what we put inside of our bodies,  also contributes to what we manifest externally? For example, if you eat too much salt, does it show up as puffiness around your eyes?

The questions about what we are consuming in terms of real nutrition remains mostly a mystery to many of us.  Did you know that you can buy a bottle of dill pickles, which do not have any dill in it? What do those descriptions on the back labels of food that we buy really mean? Maybe we need to get “food-educated”!

A cardiologist’s advice on how to use this “wonder drug”

To My Dear Brave Heart Sisters,
We can’t have too much information about tackling heart disease. Read on.

Carolyn Thomas's avatarHeart Sisters

by Carolyn Thomas  @HeartSisters

pillboxThe heart drug called nitroglycerin was once described like this in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation:

“Newer drugs quickly replace older remedies. This has not been the case with nitroglycerin, now in continuous medical use for more than a century.

“Although other applications for it have been found in cardiology, nitroglycerin is the mainstay for affording rapid, indeed almost immediate, pain relief for angina pectoris.

“At a time when the cost of pharmaceuticals is growing out of reach for many, nitroglycerin is still obtainable for pennies and remains one of the best buys in medicine.”

In honor of celebrating phenomenal contributions to the African-American community, I wanted to recognize those, who in my opinion have made a significant contribution to how we interpret black beauty and how it translates into the beauty industry.  The black community spends 9 times more than any other ethnic group on beauty and hair care products in the United States (African American Consumer Report 2013), yet the beauty industry fails to offer a range of product options to meet black consumer needs.  I would like to recognize Vloggers and Bloggers who have spent years on the web offering their insight on how to utilize products to meet our needs while encouraging us to embrace our beauty. via Kelleemudiva’s Beauty Blog | All Things Women Love.

Use SPF in Winter Too!

FYI

Everyone knows wearing sunscreen in the summer is important, but many forget that even in the winter our skin is exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you’re like me you think, “but I work in an office and am inside all day, why wear sunscreen?” Well, Dr. Marsha Gordon, St. Ives Consulting Dermatologist, has thankfully made me rethink this notion. Dr. Gordon says that although “the amount of ultraviolet radiation produced by ordinary fluorescent lighting is very small, in winter we are still exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun. We are exposed during our commutes because UVA penetrates window glass, in our offices and homes if they are sunny and we are exposed even more if we enjoy snow sports because of the reflection added by the snow.” She emphasizes that this cumulative UV exposure is what causes photo aging (exactly what we don’t want!), so it’s important to protect our skin (face, neck, chest, anything exposed) everyday. via SPF in Winter Too, Your Skin Will Thank You! – Beauty News NYC – The First Online Beauty Magazine.
