These days the conversation about climate change is a constant concern. A recurring topic on HairBlues.me has been cruelty-free and Vegan products. This month we continue that conversation as we explore what the differences are between cruelty-free, vegan cosmetics, and why some companies use “green” packaging.
The November Wellness Connections podcast explains the difference among these products, and packaging.

Happy Holidays!
Happy Earth Day ! In celebration of Earth Day, Today Hairblues is focusing on “planet friendly” SPF products . By the way, do you know that there are two ingredients in most SPF products , which are harmful to coral reefs?
SPF has a range of uses. For example, it’s remarkable that simply stated, when used correctly, sunscreen products may help prevent some skin cancers, including melanoma. “Sun protection factor (SPF): Is a number on a scale for rating the degree of protection provided by sunscreens.” Some African-Americans and Hispanics have a misunderstanding about requiring sunscreen. In fact, although darker-skin people have more melanin, they can get sun-burned and get skin cancer. The great Jamaican Reggae artist Bob Marley was diagnosed with Melanoma, which happened to be located just under a toenail.
Is your SPF product “safe reef spf“? Hairblues has focused on this topic in the past. And, you may recall the two ingredients in SPF determined harmful to the coral reef eco system – Oxybenzone and octinoxate should be avoided, if at all possible, for greater “planet safety.”
A recent comment submitted to this Hairblues blog suggested that a person wearing no Makeup can be beautiful as well as a person who does. Of course, I agree. The always lovely Alicia Keys openly rejects makeup. Of course, all you have to do is look at her in the prime of her loveliness and youth, I can’t imagine this winning duo requires too much of a decision. Can you?
I thought that it might be useful to research whether Makeup has other purposes, and can be used for example, to enhance the longevity of how our skin ages and, additionally, help to protect it. Here are just two examples (maybe suggestions). Enjoy!
A tinted moisturizer can actually be good for mature skin.
As I searched the www for opinions and ‘expert ‘ advice about the “no Makeup” choice , it became evident that the Makeup choice is – as you may have suspected – ultimately a personal decision, because ‘one size does not fit everybody’. What also became evident is that, as we age, our skin does change. It may become more dry, less smooth and thinner. There is also loss of skin elasticity.
Our first example, therefore, is it may be important to use moisturizers daily for protection from the environment because they help to act against the dryness and add some elasticity.
It’s a brand new year, and brand new times for cosmetics in California. That’s right!
Some of you may remember my post in September 2018, when I reported that a bill was introduced by Former Governor of California, Jerry Brown to BAN animal testing for cosmetics. https://hairblues.me/2018/09/30/animals-will-be-freed-from-testing-cosmetics/
It turns out that animal testing cosmetics is not a requirement to prove that cosmetics are safe.  The new law has come into effect as of January 1, 2020. This new law bans the sale or import of animal tested cosmetics. In addition, the states of Nevada, and Illinois have joined in the push to BAN animal testing on cosmetics. This is the first such law in the United States.  https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2020/02/01/business/ap-us-animal-tested-cosmetics-bans.html
