canstockphoto16025243[1]Hairblues, as many of you have noticed, expanded the topics covered on this blog to more than just hair stuff. As I explore the www for beauty and health-wise topics, it becomes more of a challenge to get that information to you in a timely fashion.  After all, many of us find that we are swamped with email. Therefore, I have purposely kept my posts to once or twice a month to avoid being the clutter in your e-box. The end of September seems like a good time to bring you some topics I think are timely as we head into the fall and soon to be winter months in New York. I am hopeful you will also find these topics and links useful.

One unexpected secret to keep your hair looking good in the winter is to invest in a humidifier. I know you’re thinking that humidity equals frizzy hair, but when you have the heat on, the air in your apartment becomes very dry and I find the humidifier helps stop your hair and skin from feeling dry. The main problem with the humidifier is that they’re not very nice-looking. I recently found a great one by Middle that looks chic and works great. Style-secrets Winter Hair Tips Winter Haircare

Sun Protection with SPF ?

heat-149937_1280Many of us know that we should use some type of protection from the sun on our skin.  But how many of us know what makes an SPF product right for our needs and to get the best results. I searched the www to find what the experts say. Make sure to click the source links for more details.

Here are some facts

  1. The term SPF, or sun protection factor, is a measurement of UVB protection.
  2. UVB rays are the burning rays, while UVA rays are the aging rays, leading to wrinkles and dark spots on the skin.
  3. By choosing a higher SPF, you may avoid a sunburn, but UVA rays may still be getting through.
  4. …choosing a sunscreen that offers “broad spectrum” protection is essential to protect against both UVB and UVA rays.
  5. Look for the following on your product’s label: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule or oxybenzone. Source: PCA SKIN

Here are some products I think are worth checking out.

Skincare News for 2016

canstockphoto19653570I don’t know about you but I have spent a ‘pretty penny’ trying to find the best skin care products to use.  It’s an expensive dent in my budget.  That’s why when I read this article in the March 2016 Real Simple Magazine, I could not wait to share it with you. Of course we all have our ‘favorites’ when it comes to skin care, and so do our faces :).  However, one should experiment occasionally when adding a new product to our skin care regimen.  Here are some of the highlights of what the dermatologists had to say.

♦ According to Heather Rodgers, M.D.  washing your face twice a day is not required because your skin protects it. For example, once you’ve cleaned your face in the evening, the next morning you only need to rinse it with water. Dr. Rodgers recommends Eucerin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser ($6.00) – Eucerin Products

♦ Elizabeth Hale, M.D. advises that it’s very important to use Sunscreen every single day.  Foundation, which has sunscreen does not protect your skin. She recommends L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition SPF 30 Day Lotion *$20.00)  –L’Oreal Products

♦ Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($23.00) shows beneficial change. –Roc Retinol Products

These are just a few  of the suggestions in the magazine article. There is a wealth of information worth purchasing the magazine for.canstockphoto14043393

In addition, you can go to the website for more information by clicking the link below.

♦ Best BB Creams for Every Skin Concern  – BB creams quickly went from trend to staple after women learned that using them could slash a few steps from their daily beauty routine. Somewhere between a foundation and a tinted moisturizer, BB creams provide light coverage to help hide imperfections, but are also laced with antioxidants and sunscreen. Source: Skincare | Real Simple

Use SPF in Winter Too!

FYI

Everyone knows wearing sunscreen in the summer is important, but many forget that even in the winter our skin is exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you’re like me you think, “but I work in an office and am inside all day, why wear sunscreen?” Well, Dr. Marsha Gordon, St. Ives Consulting Dermatologist, has thankfully made me rethink this notion. Dr. Gordon says that although “the amount of ultraviolet radiation produced by ordinary fluorescent lighting is very small, in winter we are still exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun. We are exposed during our commutes because UVA penetrates window glass, in our offices and homes if they are sunny and we are exposed even more if we enjoy snow sports because of the reflection added by the snow.” She emphasizes that this cumulative UV exposure is what causes photo aging (exactly what we don’t want!), so it’s important to protect our skin (face, neck, chest, anything exposed) everyday. via SPF in Winter Too, Your Skin Will Thank You! – Beauty News NYC – The First Online Beauty Magazine.

Who knew SPF is the Fountain of Youth?

canstockphoto7925768 I am convinced aging is something we should welcome. The opportunity to share our mature years with our family and friends is certainly a blessing.  Nevertheless, not only do we want to be fit, we also want to look our best.  Feeling good about our appearance is important to many of us. So when a study comes out that helps us to do that, we are happy to learn about it.

In a recent study conducted at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia with 903 adults below the age of 55 that regular use of sunscreen show no increase in skin aging.  In fact, the study showed that the adults who used sunscreen daily appeared 24 percent younger than those who did not use the sunscreen daily. Miracle? Maybe :), but I think many of us may consider using SPF protection going forward after hearing about these findings.  you can read more about the study by clicking this link. via Sunscreen – The New Fountain of Youth? | Advanced Dermatology Blog – Dermatologists in NY and NJ.

Below is the scoop on some of the best moisturizers with SPF.  Click on the link for details.spf_creams

  • Sunscreens are essential for skin care day in and day out, 365 days a year. If applied correctly (meaning liberally and reapplied as often as needed), they are the best anti-wrinkle product you can use. In order to make the Best Products list, a moisturizer with sunscreen must: Provide broad-spectrum sun protection and be rated SPF 15 or greater. Help skin fight sun damage. Increase healthy collagen production. Contain a mix of antioxidants, skin-repairing ingredients, and cell-communicating ingredients. Protect skin from environmental damage. Improve skin texture. Contain the appropriate ingredients for your skin type. Not be packaged in a jar via Best Moisturizers With Sunscreen: Beautypedia Skin Care Reviews.
  • When I first got into my SPF obsession (back in my undergrad years of college), I didn’t really feel the need to shell out money for the most expensive brands. I was happy perusing the drugstore aisles for a decent moisturizer. I also wasn’t aware how important having an SPF of 30 was. The best one I found was Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer in SPF 15 ($16.99) (although a SPF 30 one does exist and I recommend getting that one). via Renee Jacques: I Tried Seven Popular Sunscreens And Found The Best One.

I hope this is helpful 🙂
