Summer Hair Tips!

sun damage pic for post I love the summer, beautiful beach water, fire flies, surfing!
However, what summer can do to your hair is cause for concern.  I searched around for some tips on what you can do to prevent damage.

Just as the sun damages your skin, it can damage your hair, too. Saltwater and chlorine also take a toll on our tresses. The not-so-pretty outcome: A few weeks into summer, hair that was shiny and easily managed looks and feels fried.

Fried hair isn’t just a figure of speech. Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, a New York dermatologist, says the ultraviolet rays of the sun actually “cook the hair shaft.” The damage is most obvious when we see color-treated hair becoming faded, bleached, and brassy. Even hair that isn’t colored will suffer from sun-induced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair shaft. via Summer Hair Care – Keep Your Locks Looking Great.summer hair

  • Once you’ve found the right cut for your texture,  a few of the right products—applied at the right time—is all it takes to create a terrific style. via The Best Summer Hair Products.

Diet & Beauty… Are These Two Related? Does It Matter?

vegetablesHow many of you believe that what we consume, what we put inside of our bodies,  also contributes to what we manifest externally? For example, if you eat too much salt, does it show up as puffiness around your eyes?

The questions about what we are consuming in terms of real nutrition remains mostly a mystery to many of us.  Did you know that you can buy a bottle of dill pickles, which do not have any dill in it? What do those descriptions on the back labels of food that we buy really mean? Maybe we need to get “food-educated”!

In honor of celebrating phenomenal contributions to the African-American community, I wanted to recognize those, who in my opinion have made a significant contribution to how we interpret black beauty and how it translates into the beauty industry.  The black community spends 9 times more than any other ethnic group on beauty and hair care products in the United States (African American Consumer Report 2013), yet the beauty industry fails to offer a range of product options to meet black consumer needs.  I would like to recognize Vloggers and Bloggers who have spent years on the web offering their insight on how to utilize products to meet our needs while encouraging us to embrace our beauty. via Kelleemudiva’s Beauty Blog | All Things Women Love.

Use SPF in Winter Too!

FYI

Everyone knows wearing sunscreen in the summer is important, but many forget that even in the winter our skin is exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you’re like me you think, “but I work in an office and am inside all day, why wear sunscreen?” Well, Dr. Marsha Gordon, St. Ives Consulting Dermatologist, has thankfully made me rethink this notion. Dr. Gordon says that although “the amount of ultraviolet radiation produced by ordinary fluorescent lighting is very small, in winter we are still exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun. We are exposed during our commutes because UVA penetrates window glass, in our offices and homes if they are sunny and we are exposed even more if we enjoy snow sports because of the reflection added by the snow.” She emphasizes that this cumulative UV exposure is what causes photo aging (exactly what we don’t want!), so it’s important to protect our skin (face, neck, chest, anything exposed) everyday. via SPF in Winter Too, Your Skin Will Thank You! – Beauty News NYC – The First Online Beauty Magazine.

Organically Beautiful

canstockphoto1007021How many of you are thinking about using beauty products that are organically produced? Does it make a difference? How can you know if a beauty product is truly organic?  Below are a few things Julyne Derrick, Beauty Expert had to say:

  •  A bottle marked “organic” must contain 95 percent organic ingredients, but those marked “natural” or “made with organic ingredients” may still contain the bad stuff.
  •  Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database is all you need to find out what beauty products are safe, and which ones get a poor rating.
  • Extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil and really, any sort of oil, work great to hydrate skin both on your face and body.
