In honor of celebrating phenomenal contributions to the African-American community, I wanted to recognize those, who in my opinion have made a significant contribution to how we interpret black beauty and how it translates into the beauty industry.  The black community spends 9 times more than any other ethnic group on beauty and hair care products in the United States (African American Consumer Report 2013), yet the beauty industry fails to offer a range of product options to meet black consumer needs.  I would like to recognize Vloggers and Bloggers who have spent years on the web offering their insight on how to utilize products to meet our needs while encouraging us to embrace our beauty. via Kelleemudiva’s Beauty Blog | All Things Women Love.

February is American Heart Month

canstockphoto17900597Do you know if you have a healthy heart? Do you know the signs that indicate that a heart is not healthy or a heart attack may be imminent? Let’s do our best to be knowledgeable about heart disease.  Below is information I think will be helpful in learning how to prevent a heart attack.  During February HairBlues will continue to bring you up-to-date news to help you take care of your heart.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable.

The five major symptoms of a heart attack are:

Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back.

Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint.

Chest pain or discomfort.

Pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder.

Shortness of breath.

Every journey begins with one step, whether it’s climbing a mountain or preventing heart disease. This American Heart Month, CDC is offering weekly tips for better heart health. Take your first step onvia CDC – DHDSP – Heart Disease – February is American Heart Month.

Use SPF in Winter Too!

FYI

Everyone knows wearing sunscreen in the summer is important, but many forget that even in the winter our skin is exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you’re like me you think, “but I work in an office and am inside all day, why wear sunscreen?” Well, Dr. Marsha Gordon, St. Ives Consulting Dermatologist, has thankfully made me rethink this notion. Dr. Gordon says that although “the amount of ultraviolet radiation produced by ordinary fluorescent lighting is very small, in winter we are still exposed to ultraviolet rays from the sun. We are exposed during our commutes because UVA penetrates window glass, in our offices and homes if they are sunny and we are exposed even more if we enjoy snow sports because of the reflection added by the snow.” She emphasizes that this cumulative UV exposure is what causes photo aging (exactly what we don’t want!), so it’s important to protect our skin (face, neck, chest, anything exposed) everyday. via SPF in Winter Too, Your Skin Will Thank You! – Beauty News NYC – The First Online Beauty Magazine.

Organically Beautiful

canstockphoto1007021How many of you are thinking about using beauty products that are organically produced? Does it make a difference? How can you know if a beauty product is truly organic?  Below are a few things Julyne Derrick, Beauty Expert had to say:

  •  A bottle marked “organic” must contain 95 percent organic ingredients, but those marked “natural” or “made with organic ingredients” may still contain the bad stuff.
  •  Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database is all you need to find out what beauty products are safe, and which ones get a poor rating.
  • Extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil and really, any sort of oil, work great to hydrate skin both on your face and body.
